The rest of the album came together in January, with DeMarco working late into the night almost entirely on his own, a habit that dates back to the beginning of his career. He was on a short break from the road at the time, stealing a few days between the lengthy full-band tour for his 2017 LP This Old Dog and a more intimate solo jaunt. “I think I was in a confused, exhausted state,” recalls DeMarco, 29. He spread some lye and i was left to shovel the dirt, this was NC heat, but at least i was in some shade. That morning, and slightly hungover, my grandfather told me to help him carry the body to the grave and bury him. The night before i went out to drink some time back at the house, Tiger died in his sleep, nobody knew till the morning. The day before he passed, he knew it was time and made his grave. His illness would require an expensive surgery, nothing could save him. My grandfather planned on getting him put down soon, but put it off, hopping he could fix it. His stomach bloated up, he could barely move, flies surrounded him while he was awake. I had been giving him treats sporadicly and petting him some.
